RIVER STOUR SCOUR PROTECTION SYSTEMS

RIVER STOUR SCOUR PROTECTION SYSTEMS

PROJECT BRIEF The installation of scour protection surrounding the cutwater section of a main pier structure spanning the river stour.  This project used a pumpable micro concrete mix that was operated from a topside unit and directed into position by the diver.  Prior to carrying out the works, we had to prepare the area using hydraulic underwater cutting equipment to clear a number of subsurface obstructions.
RESPONSIBILITIES As director of operations and project manager I was responsible for organising the logistics of subsea operations and the execution of all works in accordance with the client’s brief from inception to completion.  I was also responsible for creating the checklists, risk assessment strategies and method statements daily for the use of all tools and machinery as well as keeping account of all finances and contractors.  Ensuring that the correct PPE was available on site was my responsibility which included divers dress and kevlar attire for underwater cutting operations.

CHALLENGES This project was my first scour protection project.  Mobilising and operating excavation and power units onto floating pontoons that are towed into position and anchored around the working area always poses a risk.  Environmental factors were a major consideration for this project especially during the mixing process which was undertaken by the contractor.  The use of underwater hydraulic chainsaws required risk assessment and management plans all of which I conceived.
