DEFLECTOR PLATE DESIGN INSTALLATION AND DEMOBILISATION

DEFLECTOR PLATE DESIGN INSTALLATION & DEMOBILISATION

PROJECT BRIEF To co-design and fabricate a deflector plate to divert the main flow of water around the team of divers working within a high energy river.  The unit was fabricated off site but assembled in situ on the river bank with the trench plates being welded into position both topside and subsurface by my team upon installation of the main steel framework.  Pre site surveys depicted the exact location and installation procedures which were devised in accordance with consideration for safety, dynamics and the local environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES Project Manager responsible for all works including the creation of the dive management system, risk management strategies, methodology and installation processes.  Due to the nature of this project I had to compile welding and cutting procedures along with the compilation of hot work permits all tailored subject to task.

CHALLENGES Quite possible one of the most challenging tasks of my career.  A high energy river with significant flow ratio’s, potential for differential pressure zones, floating debris, entanglement, implosion, environmental and land owner compliance, restricted anchoring and securement methods and all manner of associated risks that had to fully evaluated and managed throughout the entire process.  Securing the unit to the riverbank proved challenging with fabricated bracketry and steel plating used to fasten it to an existing section of sheet piling without it compromising the integrity of the river bank.
